The next session in the social media track is called social marketing goes mobile and concern how people are now interacting with the internet instantly and everywhere via their mobile phones.

The first speaker in this seminar is Cindy Krum from MobileMoxie. Cindy starts by linking mobile social media to Maslow’s famous hierarchy of needs – as it has been used for safety, social interaction and many of the other basics of all our lives.

The beauty of mobile social is that people can instantly interact – for example by being prompted to ‘friend’ a shop in order to get discounts instore. This can be done instantly and easily.

Social media are a workaround for those wanting to boost their mobile presence from scratch. In fact social profiles tend to rank better in mobile search than they do in traditional search — and at the same time, creating a dedicated mobile site can be expensive and time consuming. If you don’t have a mobile website, don’t forget that your Facebook page is automatically mobile friendly. Why not simply use Facebook as your mobile website?

The number of Facebook mobile users went up by 300% in the last year. And people can SMS “like [username]” for free to automatically like a page. This means they can like things instantly without forgetting to do it later.

When updating your Facebook page, keep mobile in mind. For example by adding apps and promotion codes that people can use instore.

Moving on to Twitter, the fixed website is still by far the most common access point; but the number of people using Twitter mobile is increasing sharply.

The next speaker up in this session is Gillian Muessig, president and co-founder of SEOmoz.

Iceland is the global mobile leader with the highest internet and mobile phone penetration in the world — but on the other side of the Atlantic Gillian explains that AT&T stopped their unlimited internet packages because people are now using their smart phones differently and bandwidth usage was rocketing by thousands of percent due to things like YouTube video streaming. In 2010 more smart phones were sold than PCs for the first time.

AT&T predicts that the sales of smartphones will peak in the coming years and grow more slowly thereafter, but that the apps revolution still has a long way to run. With oil as expensive as it currently is, people are increasingly not going to multiple physical shops; preferring internet shopping instead.

Mobile net browsing is much quicker than traditional browsing. We consume snippets of hyper-local info in a short time. It is not a sit-down medium. Having said this, the user engagement of mobile users is much higher and the conversion rate too. This applies to restaurant bookings, shopping decisions and even the purchase of airline tickets while stood queuing in the airport!

The mobile innovation does not stop there. What about digitally test driving an Audi? Or scanning the strawberries in the shop with your phone to track them to the particular independent farmer who grew them? Both of these are already a reality.

When developing apps, make sure they are sticky. Sticky, in this case, means offering users a reason to come back again and again. At the end of the day, it is all about relevance! You can try SEOmoz for 45 days free with the code RIMC2011!

At the end of Gillian’s presentation, the floor was opened to questions from the audience.

Saw some great session and did couple my self one on the basics of link-bulidning and one on Online Reputation Management and PR.
The earlier was done with six speakers sharing the session, three from agencies and three from the search engines. In this case Microsoft, Yahoo and ASK.

After being at the Reykjavik Internet Marketing conference last week and having Adam Lasnik from Google comment on the usage of links for visibility and how they play a role in visibility online and then here the comments from my colleagues in the panel on the same topic It was great to get confirmation that me and my team at Nordic eMarketing have a strong knowledge on link-building and the affect that has on search engine marketing, both in English and the other languages we have been working over the past years.

Great group of speakers, but for my test little to many for such a short session.

My other session was on Online PR and Reputation Management, this was a session with five speakers, two lawyers and three from agencies.
The session started with Lee Odden, whom I have had the pleasure speaking with before and it ended up with me on the panel talking about preliminary findings in a research Nordic eMarketing is doing understanding the behavior of journalists and other stakeholders after a distribution of ePR or news.

The research was done in cooperation with eNewsWire and the IceNews network over a period of twelve months where we studied the impact of over 200 articles and ePR releases.

On Wednesday night me and my wife had a great pleasure in taking Mel Carson and the team at Microsoft up on his invitation for a dinner where I meet some of my good friends in the SEM industry such as Chris Sherman and Anne Kennedy. Chris I am expecting to meet again at the SMX in London a must see show for anybody that wants to get up to speed with anything search engine marketing related.

Great work Marilyn Craft and the team at Incisive media for a successful SES NY

The penultimate conference session today is called Case Studies and Success Stories and is chaired by Kristján Már.

Óli Kr Ólafsson from Nordic eMarketing takes the podium first. He talks about an example of an Icelandic car dealership which tried not to shoot a small bird with a cannon. More targeted approach is cheaper and better.

Nordic ePR’ed the site with great effect. But simultaneously to the rise in traffic was a great increase in return visitors too.

The ePRs from the car company appeared on Nordic’s own news website which was experiencing a huge jump in traffic due to the banking crisis. It’s a case of using negative attention to push positing information.

The landing page being ePRed got 14,000 visitors in the first few days, and this is a great number for a brand new website with a great deal of competition on search phrases (even though the product was unique at the time).

It was a successful result that the targeted countries reacted best to the ePR, despite the fact that they were not the main visiting countries to the news website generally. Google results often ranked the ePR higher than the customer; but the customer is linked to in the ePR.

This was overall a small and targeted intelligent campaign that meant very few cars had to be sold to cover the costs.

Internet marketing should never be a cannon shot in the dark. Choose your pebble wisely and throw it with precision.

Next up is Rand Fiskin. Rand is talking about the fundamentals of SEO tools. Which all begins with self analysis, and then competitive analysis: where do we sit among our competitors?

Link building comes next. Targeted links that are a means to an end and not done for linking’s sake.

Link acquisition is often about search ranking more than it is about direct sales.

SEOmoz created its own domain rank software because it got frustrated by the lack of information they were able to get from the search engines. Among other things this tool allows the user to see what people are actually saying about you when they link to you.

When it comes to competitive analysis, it’s more interesting to see how you compare than just to know your score in an isolated way. When looking at links, it’s great to know that you have links from a variety of places, and not just lots from a few places.

Yahoo even allows you to find all the times you’ve been mentioned without linking to you. You can then contact them and ask for a link.

Similarly you can isolate all the pages that link to two of your competitors but not to you.

Link building is inherently a human art. The automated approach is just a waste of money and pretty much just spam. So avoid it.

Track and record your link counts over time, not just a single snapshot. That’s far more useful. Tracking rankings over time is also important, if tedious.

How much do links really matter? The answer is that they answer a tonne. The engines care about link popularity way above content and URL. Although, remember that good content earns the links in the first place…

Kristján then shows us the importance of links by Googling ‘click here’. Because millions of sites link to Adobe with those words, Adobe ranks top. Despite not saying ‘click here’ anywhere on their own site.
